Watch out, USA! Britain’s best-loved rock boys are heading across the Atlantic to live the American dream..
On a huge tour across the dustbowl of America, bliss’ favourite threesome went back to basics and swapped Wembley Stadium audiences for one man and his dog in a Texan bar. So before they break America and we lose them forever (sob!), we tracked James (21), Charlie (19) and Matt (21) down for a chat..
James
Was it good to be somewhere that no-one recognised you?
'It was totally blissful. It was great to walk around with no-one looking or pointing at you. Plus, when the record company know you’re big overseas, you still have respect and get to stay in really great hotels.'
Did you meet any celebs?
'I went to some awesome parties. Christina’s and Usher’s party after the VMA Awards was ridiculous. Cirque de Soleil performed and there were literally fountains of champagne.'
Best party ever?
'No, that would be my 21st last weekend. We had a marquee in the garden, hundreds of people turned up and I DJ-ed all night. We had to finish early because of the neighbours - but then we got wrecked at a casino!'
What would the other lads be like as boyfriends?
'If you want to party all night and meet loads of crazy people, then Matt’s the guy for you, but if you’d rather have a moonlit walk on the beach, Charlie’s your man. I’m somewhere in between.'
What did you miss most while you were away?
'My girlfriend, Kara - being away from her is horrible. I have to call her every other day.'
Are you in love?
'Definitely. We’ve been together for six years. We met at an audition for a play and she’s the only real girlfriend I’ve had.'
What makes her so special?
'She’s different from everyone else. She’s so kind and friendly.'
What’s the nicest thing you’ve done for her?
'I pretended I had to go away to work for four days. On the day I was supposed to go I handed her passport to her and took her away to Spain.'
And what present did you bring her back this time?
'A ticket to America so next time she can come with us!'
Charlie
What was the best thing about being somewhere no-one recognised you?
'Going to gigs. I usually have to hide at the back in a big coat and hat. But I was just a normal punter. It was so refreshing.'
What were the best things about sharing a tour bus with the other lads?
'The best thing about James is you can nick his Jim Carrey DVDs. The best thing about Matt is he’s always up for going out - so if you fancy a drink he’ll find the craziest place to go.'
And the worst?
'James doesn’t wash very often, so he gets whiffy. And Matt always down-tunes my guitar, which is really annoying.'
Your girlfriend, Camilla, went to America too, didn’t she?
'Yeah - which was awesome. I’ve never been away from her for more than a month so it was really good to have her along. If I’m not with her I spend a fortune on my phone bill.'
Why is she the girl for you?
'We’ve been together since school and she’s never changed - she doesn’t care about Busted’s success. And we always have such a laugh together. She’s just ace.'
What’s the loveliest thing she’s ever done for you?
'There was this video I used to rent out every week as a kid. Then the video shop closed and I found out the video was deleted. I looked everywhere for it and six years later Camilla tracked it down in a tiny shop in Australia - it was the best present ever.'
Your other band, Fightstar, have just been signed by a record company. Do you think it’s going to be hard to juggle the two bands?
'No - I do it already anyway - and the best thing about Busted is that if one of us wants to go off and do something different musically, everyone understands.'
And when are you going back into the studio with Busted?
'Hopefully early next year - we want to get started on the next album, its gonna be awesome!'
Matt
So did you miss the adulation being over in the States?
'Not really. It was depressing when only 14 people turned up at a gig, but it’s great because no-one knows who you are and you have to pull out all the stops.'
Did you go to good parties?
'I went to the Paris Hilton after-party. It was awesome. The Olsen twins were bumping and grinding together and I met Johnny Knoxville - well I nodded at him anyway.'
What do you reckon to Paris?
'Well, James likes her but then he has seen a certain DVD! But I can’t say anything about that because I bought it for him.'
Are you on or off with Holly at the moment?
'Off. I was totally in love with her, but circumstances became difficult. I’m heartbroken but I’ve been going out and having a crazy time to get over her.'
What made her so special?
'I fancied her the second I set eyes on her - and she’s got the most amazing sense of humour. And about a year ago I got beaten up by five blokes in a club and she took care of me until I got better. She’s just a very good woman.'
Ever been turned down?
'I was at school with Jodi Albert from Hollyoaks - I asked her out one day and she said ‘yes’. The next day she dumped me. She said ‘I only said yes because I didn’t want to embarrass you in front of everyone!''
Got your eye on anyone?
'Someone with the eyes and lips of Angelina Jolie, the class of Elizabeth Hurley and, erm, Pamela Anderson’s assets.'
Finally, we’re terrified of you loving America so much you’ll never come back..
'No way - I’d miss London too much. You’re stuck with us!'
Busted’s Big Ones!
Who was the smelliest person on the tour bus?
Charlie: 'James!'
James: 'Our driver.'
Matt: 'James - on the day our air conditioner broke down in Texas.'
Biggest Busted moaner?
James: 'Me - I was always going ‘are we nearly there yet?’ like a petulant child!'
Charlie: 'We all did some moaning - especially when the record company pissed us off.'
Matt: 'Me, whenever I had to get on a hot bus with a hangover.'
Biggest ladykiller?
James: 'Matt - American girls really dug him!'
Charlie: 'Not me - I’m off the market.'
Matt: 'Er.. I did OK - but a gentleman never tells!'
