They came, they saw, they told us all about being slapped down by the ladeez..
TOTP: You're at No. 3 in the charts, you're just about to perform on TOTP. So how are you feeling right now?
James: Very, very bewildered, very scared, very nervous but also excited at the same time.
Matt: I haven't really taken much of it in to be honest. I haven't really had time to settle into it yet, so it's still a bit new and crazy to us at the moment.
TOTP: How long have you been performing?
Matt: We started this summer, so it's just been so quick that we haven't really had time to settle into anything yet.
James: It's been crazy. We just can't believe it but we're thrilled.
TOTP: Your single, 'What I Go To School For' features a Miss McKenzie. Rumour has it that she was your teacher, Matt. Is that true?
Matt: Yeah, she was, yeah. She wasn't actually called Miss McKenzie, she was called something else.
TOTP: Was it Michelle?
Matt: Argh, how do you people know this stuff!?!?
James: Everyone knows it now!
Matt: Exactly, I don't know why I just don't tell everyone. So yeah, she was called Michelle. I read it on her mug so I know her first name before anyone gets any ideas about relationships, but anyway it didn't have quite as happy an ending as the song. Nothing bad happened, I just didn't run off into the sunset and get married to her or anything.
TOTP: But what was it about Miss McKenzie that made her so special? Did she wear very short skirts or something?
Matt: I dunno, I think it's 'cos at the time she was the only girl in my class with boobs. It was just something about her, a little look that she'd give you every now and again and I'd just think 'ooh, she's very nice!' She wasn't majorly attractive either.
TOTP: So what do you find attractive in girls?
Matt: We've all got very different types in girls. I like someone a bit different, not crazy..
James: A bit Kelly Osbourne-ish, eh!
Matt: No, no.. well.. I do find Kelly Osbourne attractive.
TOTP: We had her in for an interview and she's really good fun.
Matt: Is she? I'm pleased. It'd be great to go out with her coz she's a bit crazy, a bit funny. A girl could be the most amazing model in the world and just be so boring.
James: I agree with that as well.
Charlie: I don't go for the whole girls who drive me crazy thing. I just think if a girl looks good and she's nice then cool.
TOTP: Staying with the school theme, what was the worst prank you ever played at school and did you ever get caught?
James: The whole school played a prank, and I wasn't the main guy but I helped, so I felt bad. It was the leaving day for the year above us and a kid in my class really didn't get on with the year above. Anyway, the Art Room's got these massive sinks and the Year 11 guys came and got him and they carried him into the Art Room and put him in the sink and he got soaked. And the whole school knew about it and watched and that was probably the worst prank I ever played. Wouldn't have liked it to be me. The whole school was done for it and got kept behind.
Matt: I did quite a few. Nothing really bad but there were always really good ones on the last day of term. We got the Headmaster's car two years in a row. We absolutely destroyed his car. We let his tyres down, put egg and flour all over his car. What we didn't know is that there were cameras all over the car park. I got in so much trouble for that.
James: We were going to do that to our Headmaster's car as well but on the morning of the day we were going to do it someone told him and he said 'If anything happens to my car I'm calling the Police', so we didn't do it.
TOTP: Were you any good at pulling girls at school or is 'Crash and Burn' a testament to your success?
Charlie: I crashed and burnt once in my life. It was at a disco and I went up to this girl and said 'do you want to dance' and she said 'yes, just let me get my friends' and I thought fine, see you later.
Matt: I once asked this girl out in Maths. I was quite new to the school coz I'd just had to change schools, and so she said 'I'll think about it'. Twenty minutes later I got a note at my desk saying 'yes I will', so everyone knew. And the next day she dumped me! She said it was only because she'd felt sorry for me and didn't want to embarrass me in front of everyone. I became really good friends with her actually. She was probably my best friend at school.
TOTP: You all live together in a house in Finchley. What's that like?
James: It's a lot of fun, we have a really laid back atmosphere as well. We don't tell each other what to do or say to someone 'you must clean up'!
TOTP: So who's the messiest out of all three of you?
Matt: Everyone's messy, but Charlie is in a league of his own.
TOTP: You guys are all pretty snappy dressers, so do you spend a lot of time on your appearance? Is there a fight for the bathroom every morning?
Charlie: At the end of the day we wear what's cleanest, but in James's case it doesn't matter!
James: Yeah, I have a habit of wearing the same socks for a long time. I need to buy some but I haven't got the time to buy them.
TOTP: Do you have lots of parties back at the house? Do you invite lots of girls back?
Matt: Sometimes. When we first moved into the house it was party central but then we got letters from the Council and the Residents Society. And the geezer upstairs really hates us, he's such a loser. Where we live is quite posh. It's like a block of flats with apartments in this really incredible building so it's quite cushty but we do get a lot of old crones. But lots of them are really nice and luckily the people who live next door to us are deaf so it's OK!
TOTP: Do you ever get sick of each other, living and working together all the time?
James: When we go home we pretty much go to our bedrooms cos we don't feel the need to make conversation with each other cos we've been together all day.
TOTP: So do you have lots of mates down here you can hang out with?
Charlie: My mates are still at school but they all came down the other day and I went out with them and it was wicked. They're in the Upper Sixth now doing A Levels.
TOTP: Are there any stars you're really hoping to meet or hang out with?
Matt: I've heard Holly Vallance is here today so.. I've always liked Meg Ryan. I think she's very beautiful, that one.
Charlie: I wanna meet Britney! She's so fit. She really does it for me. Also, Avril's cool, I like Avril Lavigne.
James: I like Britney as well, gimme Britney. Sarah Whatmore's really fit.
Matt: I thought she was the best on Pop Idol, by far, out of all the people on that competition. And she didn't even get to the final 10. She was robbed just because those boys were good looking.
TOTP: What do you reckon to Darius, then?
Matt: He's a nice guy, actually, we see him quite a lot. He's a really top guy, very tall. We thought Charlie was tall but Darius is extremely tall.
TOTP: Do you feel stardom has changed you?
James: As a person I don't think it has, but it really does change your life. If you look at all our lives a year ago and then look at them now they're completely different.
Charlie: Yeah, it's crazy. I mean, I was walking down the street the other day and this girl jumped on me!
TOTP: On a scale of 1-10 how much would you like the following lovely ladies to be your teacher: Madonna.
James: 5
Charlie: 4
Matt: 6
TOTP: Margaret Thatcher
James: Well I do find sometimes that I need some education, and she'd be able to teach me some stuff, so 2.
