Back To School

We get to know top new pop boys, Busted

Meet James, 18, Charlie, 17, and Mattie, 19 - otherwise known as BUSTED, the hottest new act to land on planet pop. They live together, write songs together, sing together, and hang out together - and now they're set to achieve chart success together with their debut single, What I Go To School For.
We were desperate to get to know these hot new pop lads, so we took them back to school to discover what makes them tick, and to find out what they really did go to school for. So what are you waiting for? Its time to meet Busted..

JAMES - The Genius

James has got the sort of grin that would melt butter.. and the dish it came in. He's a non stop joker. If hes not doing an impression hes reciting lines from a film. Hes got more energy than a Duracell battery. In fact, he's the type of boy who would've got away with murder at school.

"I got away with a lot," He admits. "I behaved well in my first year - I sat at the front and I did my work. So I got a good reputation, and that meant I could get away with stuff later on. Some of the stuff I did backfired on me, though. Once my friend and I decided we didn't want to do Latin, so we hid in the cupboard for the whole lesson. But then the next teacher arrived before we had a chance to get out so we ended up being stuck there for another 90 minutes. Cupboards smell after a while. But I got on all right with most of the teachers and that really helped.."

Oh yes - is there anything you'd like to share with the class, James? "Um, well, there was a teacher I fancied. She was my music lecturer at college. She just had this look about her and it was sexy because she was my teacher. It's the power thing. But I reckon she liked me too - she spent alot of time near my work space.." Mattie and Charlie start laughing and then James joins in. "OK," he says. "It might just have been because I was good at music. To be honest, I was more into the girls at school than the teachers. I've always liked girls who are real individuals - the ones you can have a laugh with. It doesnt matter what they look like, as long as they're not minging!"

"I was 13 the first time I asked someone out. Her name was Kara - we'd been friends for ages and I'd wanted to ask her out for about a year, but I was too scared of rejection. Eventually I plucked up the courage and she said, 'No'. Gutted. So I spent the whole day thinking, 'Kara, Schmara!' and then I got this phone call from her saying it wasn't 'No', it was 'Maybe' and then the next day she said 'Yes'. I played it cool, but inside I was leaping around going, 'Yes!' That was a happy day."

James Fact - James reckons hes psychic: "I get premonitions. I once dreamed that Michael Jackson was standing at the bus stop on Oxford Street wearing a black jacket. Three days later I saw him on TV wearing the same jacket I'd dreamed about." Spooky.

CHARLIE - The Heart Throb

Charlie's just come to terms with his new-found fame. He digs his local paper out to show us a picture of the band. "Look," he grins. Its a clipping from the East Anglian Daily Times and Busted are the big news on page three.

"Its so weird," Charlie says. "When I used to sit down for breakfast at home this paper was always on the table - and now i'm in it. It makes everything that has happened to us seem real. I still cant believe it."

Aged 17, Charlie's the baby of the band - which means the other lads pick on him. "We get on well but I seem to be the brunt of everyone's jokes," he grins. Mattie chips in, "Charlie hates the band Nickelback. He cant stand them. So James and I put a request on the website for fans to send him as much nickelback stuff as they can. It's going to really wind him up when it arrives."

Oh, the cheeky pranksters. So is Charlie used to getting grief from these two? "We all banter," he says. "They take the **** out of the way I speak - it's an ongoing joke that i'm really posh because I went to boarding school. I just take the abuse."

"He's clumsy, too," James yells across the room. "He's always tipping food down himself or tripping over things. I always know when he's coming upstairs because there's this noise like stampeding wildebeest and all the water in my glass starts to shake."

Aw, bless him. Charlie's just smiling as Matt launches into a story about how he tipped orange juice all over their new TV..

"Yeah, I'm clumsy," Charlie admits. "And I'm really impatient, too - and stubborn. But I always treat girls well. I'm always getting dumped, though. I don't know why. When i'm going out with someone I get really involved in the relationship. I love romantic stuff like candlelit dinners and I like to look after a girl. One day I want to be on a beach with a beautiful girl and then ride off with her into the sunset.." And the girl he'd go for? "Someone outgoing," Charlie says. "Girls are really attractive if they're confident, flirtatious and sexy. My first crush was on this girl at primary school called Chantal. We dated for three weeks, but then she dumped me. Bet shes regretting it now though." Yeah, we bet she is..

Charlie Fact - Charlie hates fish: "I hate the taste of them, the smell of them, the scaly look of them.. I despise anything that lives in the sea - except dolphins, of course."

MATTIE - The Nutter

OK Mattie, it's time to dish the dirt. We've heard a rumour that when you wrote What I Go To School For you were writing about a real crush on a real teacher.

"OK.. I had a massive, massive crush on one of my science teachers when I was about 13," Mattie says. "I cant believe I'm telling you this. She still lives near my mum so she'll know who she is. I tried to be a bit flirty with her, but it never worked. Actually, I think she was married, so I had no chance - but that didn't stop me. I even took her a bunch of flowers. She accepted them and said, 'Thank you very much, Matt,' and I was like, 'No, no, tell me you've always dreamed of getting flowers from me.' Obviously I didn't say that out loud - but I thought it."

"Everyone at school knew I had a thing for her, but I was mortified when my mates told my mum. There was no escaping it - everyone knew I loved my science teacher!"

Matt's getting a bit hot under the collar just thinking about her, so he steps outside for some fresh air with the boys. While they're sitting there a boy wanders over. "'Scuse me, what band are you?" he says. "Slipknot," Matt tells him. The boy looks puzzled. Then his face brightens up and he scampers back to his friends yelling, "Oi, its slipknot - with their masks off."

Matt can't stop laughing. He loves to wind people up.. and so do James and Charlie. "I've laughed more this year than I've ever done before," James chips in. We're sure its got something to do with Mattie. "We take our music seriously," he says. "We love all this. But we also want it to be fun - we want people to have a real laugh and enjoy themselves while they're listening to our songs."

It's only a matter of time before Mattie, James and Charlie make it really big - but will fame change them? "No way," Mattie exclaims, shaking his head to emphasise the point. "I've got a group of friends i've known since I was four-years-old. They're one of the most important things in the world to me. Big up the Molesey possee."

Mattie Fact - Mattie used to leave chewing gum behind his ear. "When I was little I used to put it there before I went to sleep, but one day I woke up and it was smeared in my hair," he says. "I had to have it all shaved off - I was in a right state."
