Brits, birds, booze & Busted

Charlie, Mattie and James had the night of their lives at this year's Brit Awards, where Busted were rightly crowned Best Pop Act and British Breakthrough Act. TeenNow's favourite pop rockers explain how it feels to be so popular - and why they don't care that they were shown drunk on TV

So, Busted are now officially the Best Pop Act in Britain. How does that feel?
Charlie: Fantastic. Brilliant. Amazing. We can't believe we won two Brit awards. We thought it was fantastic to win just one. Two just sent us over the edge.
James: We're so happy. We're also really proud to be a pop band. We want to make pop cool again. We're not a manufactured boy band, we're an old-fashioned pop act and we're loving it.

You celebrated by getting trollied. How did it feel to have footage of you drunk and eating kebabs on TV?
Mattie: We all knew we were going to be really embarrassing, but we didn't care. We were nervous so we started drinking and then when we won we just had more and more champagne.
Charlie: We didn't think there was any chance of us actually winning anything so we didn't think it mattered if we were p*****.

You've come a long way in a short time. Are you scared the whole thing will burn out?
James: No way, man. People think that it's all happened quickly for Busted, but Mattie and me spent years sitting up in my bedroom writing songs and talking about a band. Even after Charlie was on board it took a long time. We're a proper band, we've done it the proper way - playing our fair share of grotty venues and pubs. That's all part of the Busted story.

Do you enjoy living celebrity lifestyles?
Charlie: If you mean going to celebrity parties, that's so not our scene. I can't stand all that looking over your shoulder to see if anyone more famous has arrived. I'd rather go down my local pub and talk to some old guy in the corner who has no idea who I am.

What about being heartthrobs?
Mattie: We all think it's a bit of a joke. None of us think we're that good-looking, although we all think Charlie's pretty damn handsome. We almost stopped him from joining the band because he was too good-looking. Only joking, Charlie.
Charlie: That's all so embarrassing. People keep going on and on about my eyebrows. I don't think they're any different from anyone else's - there's just more of them. When I go out I have to pull hats down over my eyebrows and then no one recognises me.

What's your idea of fun?
Mattie, Charlie and James: Winning awards. Playing live and getting p*****!

Is it hard being in a band and maintaining a relationship?
Charlie: Totally. The reason me and my girlfriend split up was because I was concentrating too much on music. We got back together again, so that was cool. It's tough because when I'm not with Busted I'm with my other band, Fight Star. I took Camilla out for a meal on Valentines Day, but it's really hard fitting everything in.

Both you (Charlie) and James were with your girlfriends before the band made it big. Is that important to you?
Charlie: Absolutely. They know what we're like. They were with us for us, not because we're in a pop band. I don't trust girls who throw themselves at us because we're on the telly.

So Mattie, as the only single guy in the band, do you like having girls throw themselves at you?
Mattie: I've never been a real babe magnet, so it's amazing to get loads of attention. But I agree with Charlie - you do get really suspicious of why someone's throwing themselves at you. I thought I'd be a real slag and get off with anyone who was interested when Busted first started, but I'm not like that at all. What I hate most is when girls pretend they don't know I'm in a band. I just like normal, honest girls.

Anyone in mind then?
Mattie: Does Scarlett Johansson happen to be single?

No, but Pink is. But Busted and Pink have a bit of bad history, don't they?
Charlie: This is something we want to put to rest. She's been slagging us off and we've been slagging her off, but we want it to stop. We think she's a fine artist and human being. We do love you, Pink.

Which other artists do you get on with?
James: The guys from The Darkness are excellent. Jamie Cullum is great and the guys from Muse are cool, too.

What inspires Busted?
James: Movies, movies and movies. I'm a total movie nut and most of the songs are inspired by movies from Wayne's World to Austin Powers. Our ultimate ambition is to have a Busted song on a movie soundtrack and it looks like that may happen very soon.

So what are the upsides of being famous?
James: Sounds cheesy, but just getting out music out, performing and doing what we do. The fans are also amazing. It's down to them we won our two Brit awards. We love them.

And the downsides?
Charlie: No time and no sleep. Also, you start getting paranoid about going out and doing normal things. I went to a gig the other day and this guy handed me a piece of paper. It had 'w*****' written on it. You just don't get used to that sort of thing.

Any wicked secrets?
Mattie: Yes. Whenever we have a showcase or a party we get our mates to nick as many bottles of booze as they can. We're still amazed that all this stuff is put out for us, so we can't help ourselves.

Finally, what have you done with your Brit trophies?
Charlie: I want everyone to see that I've got one. I'd like to have mine made into a door knocker so it'll be right in everyone's faces.
James: I want mine used as bed posts. I need to get another two to get all four posts filled up.
Mattie: I'm just very boring. I've just put mine on my mantelpiece and stare at them from time to time with a big grin on my face.
